Fine Arts
At Queen of Angels we offer a diverse Fine Arts Program. Kindergarten thru grade nine students benefit from a great variety of Fine Arts.
The arts are another way of looking, another way of perceiving and another way of knowing. The arts develop a sense of craftsmanship, quality task performance and goal setting skills needed for success in the classroom and beyond. As a society we must develop children who are productive, happy, well adjusted citizens, rather than kids who can just pass a test and get through school. We need to prepare children to think creatively, skillfully and outside the box. An arts education is vital in accomplishing this and to help every student to achieve to his/her potential.
Dance
Dance has been prominent in our school for many years. Joyce MacLean as well as other teachers have shared their creative talents in dance with our students. They have had exposure to many different varieties of dance which have given them the opportunity to perform at various venues, some of which are: St. Edwards Church, Special invitations to different churches, cathedrals and conferences, Cowichan Theatre for Fine Art Evening and Christmas Concert, Cowichan and Victoria Music Festivals, Providence Farms Open Door Program.
Drama
Drama is another form of fine arts that we offer. Our middle school students perform a spectacular play each year directed by Mrs. Murphy. We also offer drama as one of our grade 8/9 electives throughout the year. Teachers in the younger grades use drama as part of their reading programs, to put on plays that the students have read in books.
Music
Our extensive music program taught by Mr. Kegalj is offered to students from K-9. K-4 are offered music classes each week focusing on singing and rhythm and students in grades 5-9 are involved with our band program. We also offer extra curricular choir taught by some teachers on our staff. Many of our teachers use music in their everyday teachings. You will find our students performing their music during our school mass ceremonies, Cowichan Music Festival and at various band jamborees.
Speech Arts
Speech Arts is a positive way to give students confidence in themselves and we promote this form of art by participating in the Hector Macintosh Speech Competition each year. We have had many successful award winning entrants. We also partake in the ICS speech competition and one of the first place winners last year was from Queen of Angels!
Visual Arts
Visual Arts is said to enhance students academically. We are proud of our Visual Arts Program at Queen of Angels. Our creative and imaginative teachers incorporate art into their classroom curriculum, and you will always see a beautiful display of the fine work of our students as you walk the hallways. As well as our everyday art we offer a program called Artists & Angels. We invite talented and well known artists from our community into our school to teach our students their form of art. We are into the second year of this program and it has been very successful this far. The students celebrate their creations through an annual art show we hold in our gym. This year we exhibited over 550 pieces of art. We also select 50 pieces of art to participate in the Independent Schools Association Art Show in Victoria.
